If you are not living under a rock then you would know about the Acer Aspire Predator. It’s captivated the market with its engineered motherboard, outlandish specs, all draped in one of the sexiest casings, known to mankind.
Under the Hood
It comes with all the benefits of unified hardware and none of the drawback as Acer will let enthusiasts to overclock or change parts without any harm to the warranty. It’s the console of PCs without the lame.
So how does one benchmark a pre-built PC? It’s not like there are a huge number of high performance pre-built computers out there. In fact the only other machine worth mentioning would be Alienware but trying to get one of those for reviews is near impossible. It was decided that the Predator should be pitted against our Intel and AMD test beds to get some clarity.
The Predator has some impressive specs. The review model came with an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550, 8GB DDR2 800 memory, 2x 9800GTXs and a total of 1TB hard drive space. Combine that all with a DVD Writer, a Blu Ray/DVD writer drive, a Creative X-Fi Platinum, and the most notable of cases and you get the impression that the Predator is not a machine to be taken lightly.
The entire package also ships with a Logitech G5 laser gaming mouse and a Logitech G 11 keyboard demonstrating that Acer cut exactly zero corners.
The predator is every bit good looking too; while actually a high quality plastic, the case is functional as well as being attractive. The 120mm radiator fan is ninja grade quiet and more than capable of keeping the modest water-cooling setup under wraps. Acer has included a hot swappable system for the hard drives complete with clearly labeled OS drive which will keep the noobs from injuring their OS while allowing the rest of us to frantically copy Linux distros at the next LAN. These drives are hidden behind a little door which is worryingly weak and brings about fears of snapped plastic and tears. The optical drive bays have claw-like doors that look really impressive all the while being the biggest throwback to the machines namesake; a butt ugly alien.
This is all covered by the main door which opens Lamborghini style. There is also a multi card reader with a USB 2.0 port, and if your USB flash drive is not excessively large then it will easily fit behind the main door. On the top of the case are more USB, FireWire, and eSATA ports – just in case your Lambo door is closed.
The accompanying Acer G24 24″ LCD is a story on its own. Worthy of a separate review, it regularly inspired oohs and aaahs from everyone who saw it. With its burnt orange bezel the Acer G24 not only has the looks to accompany the Predator it also has the image quality to do the Predator justice.
We cannot however, forget about our test rigs. Our AMD test rig comes dressed in a Lian Li ArmorSuit PC-P80 which AMD had customized with a Spider/Crossfire theme. This custom case has a price tag of over $700, which in addition to making us gulp should also be factored into your final conclusion. AMD even went so far as to have green and red cold cathode florescent lights fitted. AMD combined its Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition with a Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H, 4GB Adata DDR2-800, and to top it all of a Sapphire HD4870X2.
The Intel test rig is significantly older and somewhat less impressive on the looks side. It has a Raidmax Aztec chassis but we popped in a recent review processor in the shape of the amazing Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 to compensate. Intel threw in their D975XBX2 board and 2GB DDR3-1066 memory. The system originally came with a 8800GT but we swopped this out with a 8800GTX that we had floating around. The value of the AMD system is a nice round $2100 while the Intel rig tops in at a $2600; both these rigs are around half the price of the Acer Predator, making for an interesting comparison.
The predators biggest strength was that it was an all round gladiator, every component was top notch and this is exactly why we setup our rigs to be better in just one department. Our tests included a SuperPi 1.5 mod 1M run, a Cinebench Rl0 4 core run, a round of H264 encoding, 3DMark Vantage, 3DMark 06, and of course Crysis and World in Conflict. The results were far from shocking. All CPU intensive benchmarks were in the Intel’s favor with the Predator coming in a close second; while all GPU biased tests saw the AMD coming out tops with the Predator coming in second.
What we did learn was that the Phenom X4 9950 BE really lets its system down, and the results go to show once again that if AMD want to have any chance of making an impact on the high performance desktop market there needs to be a vastly superior chip and soon. Popping the more powerful AMD GPU into the Intel machine would no doubt tear the predator a new one but that much should already be painfully obvious. The Predator seems to be the perfect middle ground in terms of performance and convenience but it is priced beyond madness and most enthusiasts will scoff at spending so much on a fairly good pre-built system
For far less it is possible to build a water cooled system with a lot more than just a mid-range quad core and two previous generation CPUs. Why the Predator doesn’t come with at least two GTX 260′s is a mystery, it’s not like the Predator was assembled two years ago; in fact the test unit had manufacturing labels dated as recently as August 2008. The Predator looks awesome, and once you figure out how to remove the side panel and you see inside you realize how much effort Acer actually went through. The Predator is a beautiful PC, it looks good, it performs well, but it is not worth the asking price of $4000. The AMD and Intel test machines are powerful rigs far beyond average Joe’s budget but still half the price of the Predator.
Acer designed the Predator to be the ultimate solution for non-enthusiasts to experience what the enthusiasts experience and for that we salute them, but unfortunately they have now taken it from being an enthusiasts-only experience to a wealthy-only experience.
Acer knows it has a good reputation and are banking on the fact that consumers are always worried about warranty to make the Predator an attractive solution rather than getting a custom rig from the local PC shop, but why does a warranty have to carry such a hefty price tag?

Dna Mark your Property.using your Own Dna for Crime Prevention
DNA technology has come along way and where it was commonly known as something that catches crooks, we can now use DNA as a crime prevention tool. Not just a crime scene weapon.
Apart from our own natural DNA, there are a variety of synthetic DNA products that we can use to mark our valuables.
Whilst police highly recommend that we do security mark our products, we are fully aware that DNA has helped to convict many criminals for crimes committed two or three decades ago.
I’ve looked at a number of DNA mark kits and outlined my findings here. As this is not an advertisement, I have excluded brand names and trademarks.
Prices vary from £10.00 up to around £50.00 and it really is a case of ‘you get what you pay for’.
The DNA mark kit that comes in at £9.99 is a cheap looking felt tip pen, the type you buy for your kids as a throwaway. The real deterrent is the sticker that warns a would-be burglar that property is DNA marked.
The pen has no nib as such; the busy end looks just like the fibre wadding where the felt tip ink would be and carries a clear medium that transfers your DNA to the property to be marked.
The ‘DNA mark’ is invisible. How would the Police find an almost invisible mark? You might ask. The makers suggest; “The client tells the officer to obtain a 10 or 15 X magnifying glass and a strong torch light and shine the light at an angle of 45 degrees where the few microns depth of the mark can be made to show up”.
There are a few serious flaws such as police time and logistics. If police discover a number of DVD players in the home of a known burglar, they will more than likely scan it a black lamp looking for UV property marking but your invisible DNA won’t show. It is likely that you will not see your property returned.
However, there could be a string of happy coincidences such as you telling your local village bobby that you have been burgled and all your property has your DNA on it, he happens to stop someone with property that he remembers belonging to you and using his 10 or 15 X magnifying glass and a strong torch light and shine the light at an angle of 45 degrees, sees your secret mark! The good old fashioned British Bobby at its best. Sadly Dixon of Dock Green has long gone.
There are cost implications in recovering DNA and converting it to evidence, the Forensic Science Laboratory conducts this and the police are faced with the bill (pardon the pun).
They are likely to opt for traditional property recovery techniques such as proving to the burglar that ‘it’s a fair cop’ and asking you to physically identify your property with serial numbers, photograph or even receipts.
The £9.99 kit is available through a network of individuals who have paid £10 for a ‘license’ to sell the DNA mark kits locally. The resellers are not security checked and can buy their business opportunity via internet auction sites and other advertisements. £10 gets them into the security business!
A police recognised product is Smart Water Tracer, designed for the protection of domestic and household possessions as well as commercial assets. The unique forensic fingerprint is practically invisible to the human eye. However it fluoresces under ultraviolet light that police use as standard, and is virtually impossible to completely remove.
The cost is around £45.00 and claims to reduce the risk of burglary by up to 83%. Police support SmartWater as it has enabled them to obtain a 100% conviction rate in court. The kit also includes warning labels to deter thieves and it takes just 20 minutes to mark property in a typical house.
The choices are spending £10 on the unknown or £45 on a commercially recognised property marking kit.
Back to DNA Marking kit. For around £50 there is another DNA Property marking kit, this one boasts he UK Secured By Design accreditation, not easy to get and very important. This too comes with warning stickers the unique DNA resides in a pot of special glue to apply to your valuable items of property. Once this glue is applied, removal of the entire DNA marking from an item is almost impossible. It is invisible to the human and can only be located with a UV lamp and remnants of the DNA will easily remain in crevices and uneven surfaces.
The added benefit is that the DNA code along with the customers details are held on a secure LPCB (The Loss Prevention Certification Board ) approved database and allows recovered property to be traced back to the owner after analysis. Forensic testing will pick up even a tiny molecule of glue and can be used to determine whom the item really belongs.
There is a DNA Print kit that retails around £40 with a patented and technically advanced UV product that is saturated with selected sequences of DNA strands embedded in the security ink. By simply placing your thumbprint on the objects that you wish to protect and/or writing your personal code or number on them using the DNA UV Security Writing Pen, you will have peace of mind knowing that if items are ever lost or stolen, and subsequently recovered, they can be scanned by the DNA UV Detector to illuminate your invisible marks and prove ownership.

Feeding Your Dog
PUPPIES- When your puppy is very young, 8-12 weeks old, you will need to feed it four times a day. You can taper your puppy’s feeding schedule gradually as it gets older. Puppies three to six months old require three meals a day. Twice a day feeding is optimal for puppies six months to one year old. After your dog celebrates its first birthday, the feeding schedule should diminish to one meal a day. For larger canines and dogs susceptible to bloating, you can feed them two smaller meals a day. The food you feed your dog or puppy should be premium dry food for a well balanced diet.
This may be combined with canned dog food, water or broth. Some dogs like a treat of people food to accompany their daily cuisine such as cooked eggs, fruits, cottage cheese and vegetables. Go easy on the people food with puppies as it can result in vitamin deficiencies, teeth and bone problems, obesity, picky eating habits and annoying table manners such as begging while owners are having dinner! You must always make sure your pup or dog has lots of clean water and wash your dog’s food and water bowls regularly.
Puppies’ nutritional needs are different than their adult dog counterparts. Choosing a puppy food that has good nutrition balance will ensure that your pup is getting the right amount of protein, calcium and the correct amount of calories. You should always check labels of dog and puppy food before buying and confirm that the first ingredient is meat and not meat by-products. When your puppy begins teething this may affect its eating habits and your puppy may not have much of an appetite. Don’t panic, this is normal. Check with your veterinarian regarding breed types and feeding habits, some larger breeds require puppy food up to year two or when they have reached full maturity for nutritional reasons.
Your puppy will have a healthier and stronger digestive system and will not suffer maladies like upset stomach or diarrhea if you feed it the same food every day. Puppies’ systems don’t adjust well to change and it’s a good idea to stick to the same schedule of feeding time on a daily basis. Even though your little loyal companion will look at you with sad and hungry puppy eyes, do your best not to give in and overfeed it. As your puppy grows, you will change its food to a new brand or flavor type. Doing this gradually by mixing some of the old food with the new food until you have transitioned your puppy over will help it adjust to the digestive changes that result from this change.
It is normal for puppies to experience some stomach upset problems and this is no cause for alarm if the symptoms go away within a day or two. Your puppy’s appetite will change as it grows and it is a good idea to monitor the changes you see with your puppy. Contact your veterinarian if upset stomach or diarrhea occurs for a longer amount of time.

how do you print cd labels through a normal printer?
